Coimbatore Half Marathon 2025.

In the Tamil movie Basha there is the scene where Rajnikant's brother comes back with the medical report of the villain, asking who he really was? because only a man whose whole body was soaked in violence could cause such injury to the body.

My injury wasn't that bad, but I remembered this scene when I saw the perplexed look of the doctor after he looked at my report.Strangely I wasn't sad, in fact I felt a bit happy becuase now I know my transformation as a runner has entered deep inside me !

Jokes apart,The past 6 months was a  roller coaster ðŸŽ¢ ride in my running journey.I had the full experience of the  FOMO lows 😢when I had to cancel runs that I have been training for ,the guilt trip 😩 when a veteran runner called me up and gave me 'gyan' for a good 1 hour and the shame spiral ꩜  when fellow runners asked (with good intentions)why I am not running as I used too.

It was not all doom & gloom. I was fortunate to have a good coach who kept checking on me.He was really worried (more than me)and kept checking on my progress.Thank you Siva I wouldnt have made it until now without your help. Also grateful for the tips from coach Rama!

Things got better from September ,when I found a good yoga place and dabbled a bit into swimming as well (Hello Ironman 😃)  My buddy Nishikant recommend a sports rehab specialist which finally turned things around.
I restarted my runs slowly and tested  my legs with a hard 10k last week. That went fine so I took a leap of faith today by doing a HM at the Coimbatore Marathon today.

Race execution : My plan at the start line was to stick to an easy pace until 10.5K and switch to harder efforts for the next 10K if I felt comfortable .The weather this time was pleasant ,with lesser humidity and dry and cool skies. The energy of my fellow runners pulled me gradually to higher pace, and I was slowly inching towards sub2 pace.

The body was warmed up and getting to a rhythm by 10K. Took a sip of my gel (Fast&UP ,non caffeine ) and switched gears to a higher pace.I was really happy with my energy levels and form until the 18K mark. By 18, I could feel the HR getting higher by the km.

A young runner came to the company and helped me push through the last 3 kms with a great sprint finish !!

I finally made it past my injury (at least for now). Now it is time to rest and recover and focus on sustainable running ,as I enter 2026!

Race organisation : Excellent race management with no traffic hiccups, well stocked aid stations  and a good post run arrangements for stretching and physio. Not to forget the delicious south indian breakfast.Thank you to the organising committee for the excellent arrangement. With its flyover and (slightly) humid weather, this is a test ground if you are planning a longer race at Chennai Marathon.

9/12: Why the poor don't kill us, Manu Joseph

The income inequality in India is one of the worst and it's getting bad.Yet , people don't revolt against the rich like the French did long ago.Manu Joseph explores this serious topic with a kind of dry wit that resonated with me.There are many one  liners,  which were funny and sad at the same time ðŸ˜€

I loved the description of Nandan Nilekani and the austerity of the CEO of a popular gold company based of Kera who by his account is a dollar billionaire and yet travels coach class and stands on queue and goes on great lengths to stop projecting his riches.

Verdict ⭐⭐⭐ A one time read.It starts off nicely but soon gets a bit rambling.I loved his first book  Serious Men more than this.

Memorable Quotes:

It is very cheap to be middle class in India. Becuase the poor subsidize us all. - pg 14

And the disdain that Arundhati Roy has for Mukesh Ambanis's giant home -- wouldnt a malnourished tribal feel the same about Roy's affluent home in Delhi's prime Jor Bagh ? - pg 38

it is the rich who are in their cages, and it hs the classy who are confused about their ideas of home. Most of the nation belongs to the nobodies; it is a republic of nobodies - pg 55

why is it that after a short period of enjoying the rich world, they long to go back 'home' , to a place where there is order only when viewed from the aircraft ? - pg 57

Across our history, all master races created order while all the enslaved people craved to break it - pg 59

People underestimate how powerful it is to be what the world does not think you are - pg 81

He did not realize one thing about posh leftists, whom he tried to imitate or emulate. They transmit a lot of negativity but they go back to their aesthetic spaces - pg 82 (About Kanhaiya kumar)

India is rigged in such a way that apart from sports, the only other sphere where the talented poor can do well is politics - pg 82

a degress is a form of economic and social discrimination  - pg 86

The nature of prestige is that its ceases to exist when the poor demonstrate that they can achieve it - pg 87

Across the world ,the poor and the lower middle class despise poor migrants, becuase poor migrants first compete for resources and jobs with the poor residents and not the editorial writers and the developmental econmists - pg 99

If at all there is something worse than poverty , it is the Indian jail and the Indian judicial system - pg 104

it is easier to demolish a mosque or build a temple than it is to enforce standardized intelligent road design across the nation - 139

the 'left ' is a monoculture of a European idea; the 'right' is culture - 143.

all elites are like parents- conservatives at home, where the stakes are high ,and liberal elsewhere, an abstract place that is nt as important as home. -143

there is no such thing as a global right. Anyting wond that is global will automatically be a left movement - 144

moral ideas like the importance of family , sacrifice, culture, religion , nation, and the idea that a community is more important than an individual , are ideas that primarily favore the rich but they are enticing to the poor who wish to emulate or imitate the rich  - 202

Austerity is not a trick.It is a form of intelligence  - 202

The state of wealthiness is not a caste;being posh is a caste. The poor despise symbols of money far les than symbols of class.

people aspire to money and not class, there is a perception that money is more gettable than refinement, some elemnets of vulgarity , like mansions... sedans are appealing. - 209

Austerity is possible only when one is able to affort everything it rejects. And what it rejects is most of the useless products that capitalisam creates for the super rich - pg 211

the true character of a new town is never in the new part;it is in the nature of its original population - 219

the 'joy of giving' is a pleasure that radiates from an emotional feudal system in which some people feel a sense of importance over the miserable . And that joy of facile self-congratulation can be an unmatched intoxicant - pg 249

To understand the true value of idelaists, it is useful to take the example not of the worst and the mediocre among them , but the finest. - 251

I believe intuitively that Ravish's monologues are more popular than Modi's.  - 251

the charm of Ravinsh is in his state of defeat. He accepts that all resistance to the BJP is futile in the near future , and that nothing he says or reports will change that.In that way , his voice is the pathos of the underdog, and that is pure art.  Such voices of lament, as of Ravish, convey to the poor that their concerns matter, that society, despite everything, has 'a moral compass' - 252

As an Indian, my stnadards are so low that my idea of exciting urban development is a Nitin Gadkari tweet. - 253

8/12: Jasmine Days, Benyamin

This is a story about the life of south asian migrants in the Middle East.

The protagonist Sameera moves to the city in search of a better life. She is living with her father  and extended family in a large mansion.Life goes smooth for Sameera. She also manages to rekindle her long lost interest towards playing the guitar. Her perfect life gets disrupted due to  protests by a section of citizens against the ruler of the country.Things turn worse when the government pulls in the migrants into the protest and pits them against the protestors.Tensions flare up among people who were friends just weeks ago.Eventually the protest is quelled but life changes for ever for Sameera

Verdict :  *** A good read on the aspirations and challenges of people who immigrate to the Middle East in search of a better life.
Especially I loved the way the author captured the life of baba, the father of Sameera who has left his family and lives in a foreign country for most of his life and visiting his family back home once in a while.

Womens world cup - what a moment.

What an amazing performance by the Indian womens team. I did not watch the match but the post match speech was something. Jemimah's emotion speech moved my heart . For some reason , the post match moments took me to year 1998 when the results from my +2 were announced.

For 2 months I was quite anxious.Faith in God kept me steady at that time. I still recall the happiness and relief I felt that day!

Jemimah mentioned that through the match , she believed in God and she knew she had to just stand there.  She was quoting this verse from The Bible

'The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still' - Exodus 14:14

What a powerful verse. Thank you for sharing this.

And her favorite song !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9ndiD0_qNk

Christ is my firm foundation The rock on which I stand When everything around me is shaken I’ve never been more glad That I put my faith in Jesus ‘Cause He’s never let me down He’s faithful through generations So why would He fail now He won’t, He won’t   I’ve still got joy in chaos I’ve got peace that makes no sense I won’t be going under I’m not held by my own strength ‘Cause I’ve built my life on Jesus He’s never let me down He’s faithful in every season So why would He fail now

7/12 - Before the Coffee gets cold,Toshikazu Kawaguchi

Picked this book as a souvenier from an Independant bookstore at Sorojini market in New Delhi. It wasan impulse buy and my only expectation was to see if the book gives me some Murakami vibes.

The story centers around a coffee shop that, allows its guest to travel to specific momen in time of their lives. There are several rules to be met for the guest to be transfered and there is no way the events of the past can be altered by the 'visit'. An elder sibling visits her sister on the day which turns out to be the last time they meet, a wife visits her husband from before he gets affected by a deadly disease.

Visiting the past , or the future does not change the present. So whats the point of using the chair?

"At the end of the day, weather one returns to the past or travels to the future, the present does not change. So it raises the question, just what is the point of that chair.?"

But Kazu still goes on believing that, no matter what difficulties people face, they will always have the strength to overcome them.It just takes heart .And if the char change change someones heart, it clearly has its purpose"

The stories were interesting. The characters were unique and I loved the way the author described the unique traits of the coffee shop and each of the characters in the shop. I found the writing style resemble some of the books of Haruki Murakami.Perhaps this is the way of writing of Japanese authors ?

Verdict : *** A one time read and the language is easy to read. Though the stories are different, the characters are all interwined. I found it a bit confusing to follow but overall I got the message that the author wanted to convey.

Quotes

Water flows from high places to low places, That is the nature of gravity.Emotions also seem to act according to gravity. When in the presence of someone with whom you have a bond, and to whom you have entruested your feelings, it is hard to lie and get away with it. The truth just wanted to come flowing out. This is especialy the case when you are tyring to hide your sadness or vulnerability.

6/12: Vaadivasal (வாடிவாசல்) , C.S.Chellappa

I picked this book when I came to know that director Vetrimaran was making the movie adaptation of this story.Vadivasal is a story set around Jallikattu,a traditional sport of Tamil Nadu. The main character of the story is பிச்சி(Pitchi), who comes to Vaadivasal's popular Jallikattu event with his friend Marudan. He is here to tame காà®°ி (Kaari) the bull.Kari is quite popular, not just in Vaadivasal, but also in surroundings. He is the favorite of the village head.No one has defeated kaari ,including Pitchis father who got grievously injured by the bull some years ago.The rest of the story is about this clash between the man and the animal in the arena to decide the winner.

Verdict:  *** This is a short story set around events happening in a single day.But it covers a lot of information about jallikattu.I loved the way the events, the tension and the emotions around Jallikattu are captured.Reading this book in tamil helped me appreciate the local slang and appreciate the story better.I couldnt wait to see the movie adaptation of the story by Vetrimaran.Hope the hiccups seen around it are resolved soon !

5/12: Keep Sharp, Sanjay Gupta MD

As we get older, keeping our minds sharp is very important. This book is a science driven guide about keeping our brains healthy and sharp. The author Sanjay Gupta is a neurosurgeon and CNN's chief medical correspondent. He has used this vast knowledge on the topic to write this actions driven book !

The first part of the book covers the brain and its inner workings. It describes commonly held beliefs about brain health and the truth in them. This section was informative and my favorite part of the book!

The second part of the book is about lifestyle, health and personality changes that we can make to ensure our brain remains sharp and fit.If you're a fitness and wellness freak, sections around movement and diet will be familiar. That said, the section and tips about maintaining and improving our personal and social connections , especially as we get into the 40s and 50s was insightful!

The third part of the book is about detecting and managing cognitive decline diseases like demetia and Alzheimers. It is a good reference for anyone going through this unfortunate situation either themselves or caring someone who is going through this.

Verdict:  ***  This is a good book to refresh our knowledge around the brain and prioritizing brain health.Although a lot of things in the book 'are obvious',I recommend you read this because reading it nudges us to apply some of the changes consciosly or unconsciously

4/12 - The Many Lives of Syeda X, Neha Dixit

What does life feel like for an Indian who is in the lower most of the privilege totem pole. A woman born poor in the minority community? What does daily life look like ? What are their dreams ,happiness and sadness ? How has life for them changed over time ? These are questions that I had in my mind, especially after reading Abhijeet Banerjee's incredible work 'Poor Economics'.

So when I read the back cover of "The Many Lives of Syeda X", I knew this was going to answer at least some of my questions. I was not disappointed.Researched for close to a decade, this book traces the life of Syeda X,a faceless Indian woman from early 1990s to present day..
Besides Syeda X, we come to know of several unforgettable characters in this book. The stories were so powerful that it was hard to believe this was a non-fiction.

This is my first book by the author and I loved her narrative style. Along with the story she also highlights key developments that happen in the country from 1990 to present that I found quite informative.

✳️Verdict✴️ ✴️ ✴️  I loved this book for it gave me a perspective that I did not have earlier. Some may find this book a bit biased.Use your judgement to pick the message from it.

3/12 - A Matter of the Heart, Education in India, Anurag Behar

I picked this book for 2 reasons, first the blurb and second, the fact that Anurag Behar is a 'long distance runner' :) (no surprises there).
This book is a collection of essays by Anurag Behar, the Chairman of Azim Premji Foundation about his interactions with teachers from the remote villages of India.Reading this book changed my perspective on education in India.
There is a lot to be improved and we are all comfortable to pinpoint and complain about it (without doing much about). But we rarely get to know about how some teachers ensure the students in their care get an education. This book has many such stories.

Verdict ✴️ ✴️ ✴️  :People read books for many reasons. knowledge, self improvement, thrill, for a good laugh. At times we also find books that radiate optimism and positivity as we read it.This is one such book. This is not fiction and there are several sections which one may find 'boring' but in between those boring stories we find anecdotes that radiate optimism and positivity!

Jaishan completes his 10th grade.

It was a tense few months, but finally Jaishan completed his 10th grade and got excellent results!!  More than the marks, I loved his dedicated , sincerity on the exam, specially towards the final days of preparations.

As he was preparing for the exams, I could not resist comparing his preparation with how I had studied for my SSLC exams.  Technology has improved a lot these days and the kids have access to lot of online material.

2/12 : The Bible: A Biography , Karen Armstrong

I brought this book at the second hand book store at the Hyderabad BookFair. I loved Karen Armstrongs earlier book about The Buddha and expected this to be on similar lines.Easy to read and deeply researched.

I was not disappointed. The book went deep into one of the most read books of humanity, The Bible. It starts off from the Old Testament and its history, followed by The Gospel.Through this book I also learnt many things about the early days of Christianity , the role of St.Paul and the backstory of his epistles which are a major part of the Bible in its current form.

Verdict : ✴️ ✴️  ✴️  The book is not for the faint hearted. Pick this up if you are looking for a raw history of The Bible.

Free, Florence & The Machine

Someone shared this song and its lyrics today and its resonated with how I am feeling today. Hope I could get free someday !

"To exist in the face of suffering and death and somehow still keep singing"

Is this how it is?Is this how it's always been?To exist in the face of suffering and deathAnd somehow still keep singingOh like Christ up on a crossWho died for us? Who died for what?Oh, don't you wanna call it off?But there's nothing else that I know how to doBut to open up my arms and give it all to you
'Cause I hear the music, I feel the beatAnd for a moment, when I'm dancingI am free, I am freeI am free, I am free

Books 2024.

This post was always in my mind . I coulnt make it on time due to multiple priorities. Like 2023, I managed to read a reasonably good number of books in 2024 too. I wanted to read a lot of fiction this year. Though its not much, all the fiction I read this year was pretty interesting.

Notable reads from my 2024 journey:

Writing that I enjoyed a lot:

The Maniac, Benjamin Labatut - A story of Jon Van Neumann. A polymath who influence the military and computing history of the United States. Part history and part fiction, this was a unique experience reading this book. Benjamin Labatut's writing makes is one hell of an experience. I highly recommend this book for anyone with interest in popular science and biographies of interesting characters  (fiction / non-fiction).

Most inspiring:

The Rise of the Ultra Runners , Adharanand Finn - As an amateur runner who is passionate about all kinds of runs, this book satisifed my appetite and had moments that were quite motivating. Though I am a long way from longer distances, this is one book I would come back to, if I ever hit a running slump.

Unique book:

வேடிக்கை பாà®°்ப்பவன் (Vedikkai Parpavan) : My first book on Tamil that I really loved reading till the end. Some sort of journal of popular poet Na.Muthukumar. It is a mix of facts and imagined facts that I really enjoyed. Thanks to 'TheBookshow' podcast by RJ Ananthi for introducing me to this book.

Most informative:

Outlive, Peter Attia : Got this book after hearing him on some of the popular Podcasts. It was quite informative, especially the sections around risk markers that help figure out Cardiac issues much earlier than normal methods. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in logevity and fitness.

Club Run 2025 - A sub100 min HM !!

Gratitude to Lord Almighty ! A dream come true . Sub140 on a road race .HM PB by 2 mins ! Thank you coach Siva for your belief that I can do it 😀.

Special dedication to all my buddies from Miyapur Metro Runners!

✳️Training block:

▪️After my Bengaluru Marathon, decided to stick to shorter formats and improve my baseline timing and running economy.

▪️Besides personal commitments forced me to stick to short distances.I switched my training ground from BHEL and Gachibowli to something closer.

▪️The 1km Miyapur Metro link road came in very helpful for this.

▪️Many of my old friends and new regulars were running here and it gave me an extra boost to complete these long training runs.

▪️Yet,a sudden curve ball arrived in the form of a 2 week travel followed by a fall at BHEL during one of the long runs.

So I stood on the start line without a lot of expectations planning for a 5:00 pace HM.

✳️Race execution:

▪️With not many goals, my plan for  today's race was " f* around and findout" . I wanted to a bit aggressive with my gels usage today .

▪️1-4k : Took a sip of Unived 100g gel at start line itself. I felt energized, although the HR was high, my form was intact and i found myself pushing towards 4:50 and faster.

▪️4-12k : Continued to hold the pace .The uphills created some doubts in my mind but today I was successful in shutting my mind voice . Completed my first gel and took a sip of my second gel at 10k mark .

▪️12-17k : The fatigue started to show up . Thankfully a good friend was running close to me at similar pace. My only focus was to stick to him as long as possible. Completed my second gel around 16k.

▪️18-19 : The most tiresome part. I recalled how I usually get slow at this point..thanks to the gels , today was different , I was able to sustain the form, even though the pace dropped a bit.

19k to finish : At the 19k mark checked the elapsed time and I was pleasantly surprised to see the clock was 1:29:34 ! A slight ray of hope that today could be the day for a PB 😄.

It was unrelenting uphill and my mind was getting stronger by the minute. I kept my eyes on Kiran who was 300m in front of me .Soon I was at the final stretch and took some strides to cross the finish !

Yes I made it ! What I thought to be impossible finally happened. A sub100 HM on a road race !!

A visit to MIT

It was a Sunday, it was my sisters birthday and it was also the day I managed to visit MIT, the worlds best engineering college . What a day !!

Many years ago, on my first visit to Boston, MIT was the major location that I wanted to visit with Akka and Athan. At that time too it was a chilly evening with strong winds from the Cambridge river. What was different was that , after so many years, I got to enter into the campus as a proud uncle of my nephew who got admitted to MIT for his Undergraduate !!

My nephew took me to his dorm , the MIT Chapel and also gave me a ringside view of the lecture halls and finally inside the MIT Media lab. A place that I always wanted to visit .

A proud moment that I will cherish for a long time ! Some pictures from my visit below.

In front of one of the dormitories.

INSIDE the MIT Media Lab !

Exam hall within the MIT
