6/12: Vaadivasal (வாடிவாசல்) , C.S.Chellappa

I picked this book when I came to know that director Vetrimaran was making the movie adaptation of this story.Vadivasal is a story set around Jallikattu,a traditional sport of Tamil Nadu. The main character of the story is பிச்சி(Pitchi), who comes to Vaadivasal's popular Jallikattu event with his friend Marudan. He is here to tame காரி (Kaari) the bull.Kari is quite popular, not just in Vaadivasal, but also in surroundings. He is the favorite of the village head.No one has defeated kaari ,including Pitchis father who got grievously injured by the bull some years ago.The rest of the story is about this clash between the man and the animal in the arena to decide the winner.

Verdict:  *** This is a short story set around events happening in a single day.But it covers a lot of information about jallikattu.I loved the way the events, the tension and the emotions around Jallikattu are captured.Reading this book in tamil helped me appreciate the local slang and appreciate the story better.I couldnt wait to see the movie adaptation of the story by Vetrimaran.Hope the hiccups seen around it are resolved soon !
