4/12 - The Many Lives of Syeda X, Neha Dixit

What does life feel like for an Indian who is in the lower most of the privilege totem pole. A woman born poor in the minority community? What does daily life look like ? What are their dreams ,happiness and sadness ? How has life for them changed over time ? These are questions that I had in my mind, especially after reading Abhijeet Banerjee's incredible work 'Poor Economics'.

So when I read the back cover of "The Many Lives of Syeda X", I knew this was going to answer at least some of my questions. I was not disappointed.Researched for close to a decade, this book traces the life of Syeda X,a faceless Indian woman from early 1990s to present day..
Besides Syeda X, we come to know of several unforgettable characters in this book. The stories were so powerful that it was hard to believe this was a non-fiction.

This is my first book by the author and I loved her narrative style. Along with the story she also highlights key developments that happen in the country from 1990 to present that I found quite informative.

✳️Verdict✴️ ✴️ ✴️  I loved this book for it gave me a perspective that I did not have earlier. Some may find this book a bit biased.Use your judgement to pick the message from it.
