One hundred years of solitude is the most poetic book that I have read until now.
The story is set in a fictional town of Mocando .It chronicles the life of the Buendias .In many ways the story of the Buendias is the story of the family. The novel is about human life, love, solitude and death.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s narration is wonderful and many times is poetic. (the novel won him the Nobel prize in literature). Here are some of the quotes that I liked (in no particular order)
It is enough for me to be sure that you and I exist at this moment -pg 414.
One minute of reconciliation is worth more than a whole life of friendship -pg 287 (Ursula to Amaranta).
In one single day, with a brutal slap , life threw on top of her the whole weight of a reality that he parents had kept hidden from her for many years. - pg 212 (on Fernanda).
Before reading the final line, however he had already understood that he would never leave that room. For it was foreseen that the city of mirrors would be wiped out by the wind and exiled from the memory of the men. - pg 422.
'What shocks me about you' ,she said smiling 'is that you always says exactly what you should not be saying'. -Meme to Mauricio.
He died of old age, in solitude, without a moan, without a protest , without a single moment of betrayal, tormented by memories and by the yellow butterflies. - pg 297 (About the death of Mauricio Babilona).
She was still think about Mauricio Babilona, his smell of grease ,and his halo of butterflies and she would keep on thinking about him for all the days of her life until that remote autumn morning...without ever having spoken a word.- (About the death of Meme).
