Movies 2011 : A year end wrap up.

As 2011 comes to a close, here is a year end summary on some of the good movies that I watched this year.

The King's Speech : Set in the early part of the 20th century, this movie is the story of King George VI of Britain and his incredible feat coping with  his stammer with the help Lionel Logue, an unconventional 'speech  therapist'.
It is not easy to live with a stammer that too if you are a king and the whole world wants to hear your words for inspiration.

TheKingsSpeechThis movie has all the necessary ingredients for a good Drama movie. Excellent performance by Colin Firth as King George V1  (who won an Oscar for the role) and Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue. A must watch from the list of movies released last year.

The Black Swan :  Nina Sayers has been selected as the perfect one to play the lead role (Odette)  inthe Swan Lake ballet . But as she works hard for that, something else happens. She gets consumed by the
  BlackSwan
character of the play and ends up becoming like Odile , the Black Swan.

One might find the story of the movie to be pretty boring. Yet this movie is not about the story. Its more about the acting itself and that makes this movie stand apart.  I didn't know that  ballet dancing is so exhausting and a highly competitive profession.Natalie Portman got a well deserved Oscar for playing as the obsessive ballet dancer in the move.

Kung Fu Panda 2 : After stealing our hearts  becoming the 'Dragon Warrior' our favorite Panda is back. This time he is on a quest to find 'inner peace' and in that search, he learns about his childhood and his birth parents too.Of course there is also the saving the world from bad guys part.

Just like the previous movie, there are lot of good quotes in this movie too. Here is a sample one:

[after Po has defeated all the cannon balls thrown at him and destroyed Shen's ships]
Shen: How did you...how did you do it?
Po: You know, you just keep your elbows up and keep the shoulders loose.
Shen: Not that! How did you find peace? I took away your parents. Everything! I...I scarred you for life.
Po: See, that's the thing, Shen. Scars heal.
Shen: No, they don't. Wounds heal.
Po: Oh, yeah. What do scars do? They fade I guess.
Shen: I don't care what scars do.
Po: You should, Shen. You've gotta let go of that stuff from the past, cause it just doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is what you choose to be now.

Here is a list of some old movies that I loved watching this year.

Fargo:  I am a big fan of movies by the Coen brothers. Their movies never disappoint me. Their movies have this really gruesome and cold blooded murders that sticks on to your mind. Fargo is an old one by the Coen brothers that I always wanted to see.
FargoJerry hires two henchmen to kidnap his wife so that he could get some money from his father in law.It would be a simple drama for few days that would coerce his father in law to shell out some money from his huge assets. But his plan falls apart and in the event it unleashes a string of bloody murders.
This is a pretty violent movie. Watch this if you like movies like PulpFiction, Reservoir Dogs or NCOM .

Apart from these movies, there are some more movies  Pi ,The Fighter and  Star Trek: FirstContact  that I enjoyed watching.

A decade after 9/11.

It wasn't the first time I we saw tragedy striking on a large scale . Earlier that year Gujarat witnessed one of its worst tragedies. However no event could have collectively brought the world to a halt like the 9/11.

twintowers That was the first time I remember  seeing US airports, New-York stock exchange shutting down due to some external event.  For the next 3 hours,  no one was sure what would happen next ..state of panic and terror in its true form.

10 years on, we are happy that there were NO further attacks .. The US government  has managed bring down the organization and its leaders too.

Though the iconic twin towers are down, the world saw true heroes  , men who stood to their task braving death, great leaders , who were able to bring back normalcy and safety to NewYork.

There are many tributes, memoirs ,post 9/11..among them ,this one by AlanJackson is my favorite.

Lyrics here :

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you in the yard with your wife and children
Or working on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
Risin' against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones

And pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out in pride for the red, white and blue
And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?

[Chorus:]
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell
you the difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

Were you teaching a class full of innocent children
Or driving down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you loved her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes, hope it never happened

Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Or speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Or go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin'
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers

Did you stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love?

[Repeat Chorus 2x]
And the greatest is love.
And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day?
